Movie Alert: Pontypool

"Pontypool"

Earlier this year, an interesting little thriller came out called, “Pontypool.” It’s centered around Grant Mazzy, a talk radio show host, and his co-workers broadcasting their daily program in the midst of a horrible blizzard. During the program, a  series of odd events occur surrounding a local doctor’s office in the nearby town of PontyPool. These events later lead the group to discover a viral disease is spreading in their region. Interestingly enough, the disease is not spread by biological contamination, but by the comprehension of the English language.

Set mostly inside the radio station, the film has an ingenious way of capturing the audience while not overdoing the suspense. With its small cast, the thriller is an absolute must-see if for nothing else than the entertaining commentary by Stephen Mchattie (Grant Mazzy).

I think I’m in love…

Juno is hands down one of the top 10 movies of 2007. (I said it, which means I meant it!) It’s a smart film about a pregnant teen (Ellen Page) who chooses to give up her child to a seemingly perfect couple (Jason Bateman & Jennifer Garner).
Juno surprisingly turns a potentially grim topic into a lighthearted “do-able” story that evaluates love at the often touted puppy stage (high school), the newlywed stage, and the 2nd marriage stage (Juno’s pop and step-mom).
I think I’m madly in love with Michael Cera. (“He’s the cheese to my macaroni.”) Throughout the movie, I got lost in his über cuteness! {Beware}
Between him and Ellen Page’s sharp lines, Juno is filled with numerous notable quotables like, “Ku-do!”, “Don’t think it’s yours just because you marked it with your urine!”, and “It makes his junk smell like pie.”

A must-see for Jamie-Lynn! (Cheap shot, I know, but I figured since the other half gets it rough, why not flip the script?)

Rush Hour 3

Rush Hour 3

Wednesday night I got the opportunity to check out Rush hour 3 before its nationwide release. In all honesty, I didn’t expect much from this long over due threequel, but I was overjoyed to see James Carter (Chris Tucker) & Lee (Jackie Chan) back in action. In Rush Hour 3, we see a much more mature-looking Carter & Lee saving the day in both LA & the city of lights, Paris. The storyline is simple & recycled with a few slightly engaging characters and a very modest amount of plot twists.

When you really ponder the elements of movies like this, it’s really formulaic. There is a Black cop and an Asian cop. Add an ounce of forced awkward cultural bonding, and a hint of secretly suspicious European character(s) disguised as noble, upstanding figure(s). Throw in a pinch of sabotage from the European, who  emerges as an evil cohort of sorts. Marinate a sequence of events that prove to test our protagonists. And lastly, top it all with an amazing display of the “deus ex machina” (to restore viewer faith)  End result = Big box office hit. (I get it!)

All in all, the movie carries pretty much of the same intensity & plot quality as the last two, but that doesn’t stop you from enjoying this action-packed comedy.

Peace & Love

Update:

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who had an undesirable view of RH3.
